Zell am See based in one hotel

With the well-known Zell am See, we have chosen an ideal starting point for your trip. On mostly flat cycle paths, you will explore the region around Lake Zell and enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding peaks of the over 3,000 m high Tauern mountains, some of them snow-covered. You will comfortably ride to unique natural attractions such as the Krimml Waterfalls or the Seisenbergklamm gorge and to cultural highlights like the National Park Museum or the tourist mine in Leogang. It is also worth making an excursion to the highest mountain in Austria - the nearby Grossglockner at 3,798 m. A shuttle bus will take you to 2,500 m. Many castles and palaces are located on or high above your route. Your starting point is the 4-star Hotel ´Zum Hirschen´ in a central location in the immediate vicinity of Lake Zell. Numerous first class restaurants for dinner are located around the hotel. After a day of cycling, let your hosts spoil you, and get to know the locals to experience living traditions for yourself.

Itinerary

Your place of arrival is located right in the region called Pinzgau and is one of the best touristic spots in Europe. Your bicycles are waiting for you in the booked accommodation.

After breakfast you will take the local Pinzgaubahn to Krimml, where the largest waterfalls in Europe await you. A well-positioned mountain trail will allow you to observe this natural spectacle from above. With the bicycle, you will ride back via the Hohe Tauern National Park and the region called Oberpinzgau, accompanied the whole way by snow-covered three-thousand-metre peaks.

Note: The ´Pinzgaubahn´ was severely damaged in a storm in 2021. The repair is not yet complete. At this point in time, the work is likely to continue into 2024. In this case there is a rail replacement service or a bus shuttle as a replacement.

After breakfast, a half-hour train ride will take you to Hochfilzen. The oldest mine in the country is located in Leogang. Entry to the local tourist mine is included. The bicycle trail follows the Leoganger Ache until the Saalach river, which will then guide you all the way back to Zell am See.

Today’s plan involves a relaxed tour around Lake Zell. On the north shore, you will find Prielau castle, a former hunting lodge for the prince-bishop which is now used as a hotel. The south-eastern shore offers a magnificent natural area - reeds and other water-loving plants have made themselves at home on the lake bed here. Before you return to your hotel, you should take some time for a long stroll around town. The afternoon has been left at your disposal.

With the train, you will quickly arrive in Werfen. The Hohenwerfen fortress is a medieval hill castle which is sure to astonish you. On the way back to Zell am See, you will follow the course of the Salzach. In Bischofshofen, you can admire the ski jumping hill on which the final of the Four Hills Tournament is held each year. In St. Johann, you will find the world-famous Liechtensteinklamm gorge, a mighty natural spectacle with a 50 m high waterfall at the end of the gorge. Via Bruck on the Glockner Road, you will again reach your starting point, Zell am See.

Today you’ll be spoiled for choice. Use the day to take a refreshing dip in Lake Zell or just relax in the hotel’s spa. However, an excursion to the highest mountain in Austria is also a great option. The Grossglockner High-Alpine Road with its 48 kilometres and 36 hairpin bends is one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the world. An excursion with the most modern travel buses will take you right into the incomparable world of experience in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. You will be accompanied and informed by an experienced and knowledgeable national park ranger. The Glocknerbus departs 2 times per week in the period from the end of May to the middle of September. Alternatively, you could visit the alpine reservoirs in Kaprun, or go hiking on the Schmittenhöhe. Whatever you decide to do today, an evening walk along the Esplanade will bring to mind a more southerly destination and help you to forget everyday life.

You will start your day with a short train ride to Saalfelden. From there, it’s only a little bit further to Weißbach, where the Seisenbergklamm gorge or the Lamprechtshöhle cave are waiting to be discovered. Wood cutters built a 600 m long trail here in 1831. The way back will take you via Maria Alm and Ritzensee lake through small rural hamlets to Zell am See.

Your journey home begins after breakfast. We would be happy to help you book an extended stay in this magical region.
