Itinerary

The international harbour and modern architecture are well-known symbols of this Dutch metropolis, but Rotterdam has much more to offer; the city is considered one of the liveliest in the Netherlands. Hip restaurants and cool cafés offer all kinds of tasty treats, and you won't be disappointed when it comes to art and culture either. One thing is certain: you will never be bored in Rotterdam.

The first highlight of your cycle tour awaits you in Kinderdijk. The 19 impressive windmills were built as early as 1740 and are considered a symbol of Dutch water management. The legendary setting will take you back to times long past. You then pass through Holland's oldest city, Dordrecht, where there are more than 1000 monuments to marvel at. Numerous cafés invite you to linger in the winding alleyways. The fortified town of Willemstad is your destination for today.

You will leave Willemstad and first reach the island of Goeree-Overflakkee: A true paradise for nature lovers. Here, extensive polders and nature reserves alternate with charming Dutch villages. Continue to the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, known for its beautiful beaches. You will find plenty of small boutiques in the harbour town of Zierikzee. The sunset is particularly beautiful during an evening stroll along the beach promenade.

The Zeeland Bridge is around 5 kilometres long and takes you from Zierikzee to Noord-Beveland. This island lies between the Oosterschelde and the Veerse Meer. On the Walcheren peninsula, Fort Rammekens is well worth a visit. You can enjoy a marvellous view of the Westerschelde during a free tour. Afterwards, take a stroll along the longest promenade in the Netherlands: the cool harbour town of Vlissingen is a great place to relax. Today's destination is Middelburg, the capital of the Dutch province of Zeeland. There are plenty of sights to see in its winding alleyways.

Today’s cycling stage takes you northwards across the island. The landscape alternates between forests, old villages and small towns. In the Kop van Schouwen nature reserve, you can completely forget about everyday life. Again and again, wide beaches with golden sand invite you to take a dip in the cool water. The Delta Works are an absolute highlight. The largest storm surge barrier in the world is made up of a total of 13 structures: An imposing construction of dams, dykes and locks. You will spend the night in the tranquil seaside resort of Ouddorp. Here as well, the beach is just around the corner.

You leave the island of Goeree-Overflakkee and cycle to the island of Vorne-Putten. The Harlingvlietdam is the sixth structure of the Delta Works and guides you over the sea with fantastic views at all times. You then pass the medieval town of Brielle and the maritime town of Maassluis. There are plenty of listed buildings to discover in the historic town centre. Via Vlaardingen and Schiedam, you finally return to Rotterdam, the starting point of your cycle tour. With many great impressions in your luggage, you can round off the evening in one of the cosy restaurants.

Individual departure after breakfast. There is always something going on in the Dutch harbour metropolis, so we would be happy to book an additional stay if you want to explore the city.

Tour character

An easy cycle tour on flat and predominantly tarmac cycle paths and side roads with little traffic. Only when entering and leaving the towns should you expect increased traffic. The route largely follows the Dutch cycle path node network, so the signposting is very good. This tour is also suitable for families with children as well as beginner cyclists.
