Perhaps you have already driven through South Tyrol on your way south – on the motorway, by car. Perhaps you have already guessed how beautiful the landscape is between Tyrol and the sea. But a cycling holiday in South Tyrol will definitely open up a whole new world for you. Between Merano and Lake Garda there are fantastic cycle paths that offer you exciting rides – past ice worlds, mountain ranges, orchards and vineyards.
Take the train line ‘Vinschgaubahn’ towards the mountain pass ‘Reschenpass’. From the town of Mals onwards to Glurns (perfectly preserved Medieval city wall). Via the Montani ruins past Schlanders and heading south to Merano. Castles and palaces dot your way or tower high above (i.e. Juval castle owned by the Austrian mountaineer Reinhold Messner). While cycling enjoy marvellous views of the impressive ‘Ortler’ massif and the ’Stilfserjoch’. This stage can be shortened if you wish.
Via Lana (Schnatterpeck altar) and through numerous orchards and vineyards in the area of the South Tyrolian wine route, past several well-fortified castles, palaces and ruins onwards to Eppan and along the base of Sigmundskron castle (Messner-Mountain museum) to Bolzano (pergolas, ‘Ötzi’ museum).
Through numerous beautiful orchards and vineyards near the South Tyrolian wine route, you’re passing various castles and ruins while cycling to the Lake Kalterer See and to the charming winetown, Auer.
You will ride your bike from Auer on the Adige river dam bike path. At the Salurner Klause, the German speaking South Tyrol ends. The route will lead you through famous wine regions of Trentino to the old Episcopal city of Trento (old town, cathedral, castle Buonconsiglio).
Shortly after the old Tyrolean border town Rovereto, you will leave the Adige Valley. In Mori you will taste the world famous pistachio ice-cream in the Gelateria Bologna. After the only more significant climb (approx. 150 metres) over the small San Giovanni pass, you will head down to the lake. Your bicycle tour will end in Riva or Torbole.
