Mainz - Cologne

Rhine bike path IV

The Romans have been here already 2000 years ago because of the thermal springs and the healing water from river Rhine. Today there are a lot of medieval fortresses, viniculture and well worth seeing cities as well. People are coming from all over the world to visit the Rhine valley between Mainz and Coblenz which is part of UNESCO world cultural heritage since 2002.

Itinerary

Individual arrival in Mainz. Take your time strolling through the old town with its half-timbered houses and medieval market square. Your bicycles will be ready for you to pick up at your booked accommodation.

The Rhine will guide you out of the city. Rolling vineyards and romantic winegrowing villages line your path and tempt you to taste the local grape varieties. A short detour will take you to Eberbach Monastery, and the famous street ‘Drosselgasse’ in Rüdesheim also invites you to linger.

The cycle tour will take you into the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Today's stage destination is St. Goar. Take enough time to visit the Loreley, which is famous far beyond the town’s borders. The Loreley is a slate cliff, and also the name of the mermaid who sits atop it. According to 19th century legend, she would comb her long golden hair there and attract boatmen with her song. Despite the dangerous current, they no longer paid attention to the course, and their ships were wrecked on the rocky reefs.

You will spend another wonderful day in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, passing several castles and palaces perched high above the Rhine. The small wine villages of Boppard and Rhens invite you to linger. At Lahnstein, the Lahn River joins its big brother. From there, it is only a short distance to Koblenz. The city centre lies at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine and is ideal for an evening stroll. A visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is also recommended.

The Rhine increases in width in this section and the scenic Lower Middle Rhine Valley will inspire you. On your way, you will cycle through many charming little villages. In Remagen, there is an information centre about the bridge that achieved sad fame during the Second World War. Rolandseck with its historic buildings and the Arp Museum Bahnhof is also worth a visit. Tonight, you will stay in the spa town of Bad Godesberg.

Via the former federal city of Bonn, you will quickly reach Cologne, the end point of your cycling tour. Cologne Cathedral will greet you from afar. Today's stage is deliberately kept a little shorter so that you have enough time to visit the old town with its wealth of sights.

There is a lot to discover in Cologne. We would be happy to book an extension stay for you. Our return transfer is also very convenient and can be used every Wednesday and Saturday from your booked accommodation.

Tour character

For the most part, the Rhine Cycle Route takes you along paved and asphalted roads and cycle paths. There are only a few short passages with a little more traffic. The cycle paths are signposted throughout and are excellent. This is a very easy cycle tour that is also ideal for families with children and does not require any special fitness.
