Salzburg - Prague

From the city of Mozart to the golden city.

From Salzburg, the city of Mozart, to the golden city of Prague - this bicycle tour connects two of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Between the cities, there are also many attractions waiting to be discovered. Your tour will first take you through the gorgeous Salzkammergut with its breath-taking panorama. Crystal-clear lakes will entice you to take a dip and ensure cool refreshment along the way. Via the Upper Austrian provincial capital of Linz, your route continues to the romantic Mühlviertel, and eventually you’ll ride through South Bohemia in the Czech Republic. You will experience magnificent virgin and cultivated landscapes. Lush meadows and deep-green forests will give way to small, idyllically situated towns and villages. You will pass by many castles and palaces, and cross untouched river and pond landscapes. The partly hilly terrain will put you to the test, but the rich contrasts and idyllic landscapes will be fair compensation. Pretty little towns and bohemian villages are waiting to be discovered and will tempt you to stay a while. A bicycle tour like no other which equally combines nature and culture and guarantees a break from everyday life.

Itinerary

Arrival in the culturally rich city of Mozart. Make time for a stroll around the old quarter and visit the house where Mozart was born. Your bikes are ready to collect in your booked accommodation.

It will be difficult to leave the city of Mozart behind. The first leg of the journey brings you to the so-called Salzburger Flachgau. You will follow the route of the historic railway from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, passing picture-perfect localities like Eugendorf and Thalgau along the way. A quick side-trip will bring you to the Mondsee or “moon lake”, the perfect place for a midday pause. Continuing your journey along the shore of the Mondsee, you will soon spot Lake Wolfgang. Mozart is also ubiquitous in today’s finishing point, St. Gilgen.

Today’s route starts by taking you along the shore of Lake Wolfgang. A quick dip will provide instant refreshment. From Lake Wolfgang, the Ischler Ache river brings you to the imperial city of Bad Ischl. Take the time to visit the imperial villa, or simply treat yourself to a piece of cake in one of the many local confectionery shops. From Bad Ischl onwards, you will follow the course of the river Traun and quickly reach Ebensee on the southern shore of the Traunsee. Following the shore of the Traunsee, you will ride to Gmunden. Alternatively, you can do this part of the journey by ship. After Gmunden, you will leave the Salzkammergut behind. A short train ride brings you to the Upper Austrian provincial capital of Linz.

The train will take you from Linz to the romantic Mühlviertel. Today’s route includes a few climbs, but the incredible beauty of the landscape makes up for them. Soon enough you will cross the border into the Czech Republic. The Lipno Reservoir will entice you to take another quick dip. Finally, you will follow the course of the Vltava, which will guide you to Český Krumlov.

Today’s route has been kept short on purpose - after all, it includes two of the most beautiful cities in the Czech Republic. The medieval Český Krumlov, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, is a highlight of the tour. Take a stroll through the winding streets and let yourself be enchanted by the city’s unique atmosphere. During today’s journey you will pass by many small, picture-perfect country villages. The secluded nature guarantees peace and relaxation. After some sightseeing in the South Bohemian city of České Budějovice (also known as Budweis), you can quench your thirst with a Budweiser beer.

It’s not just the world-famous Budweiser beer that makes České Budějovice special. The royal city, which was founded in the 13th century, is now the centre of South Bohemia with 100,000 inhabitants. The rambling marketplace with the Samson fountain fascinates to this day. Pretty arcade houses from the gothic and renaissance periods complete the setting. Take some time to explore this enchanting city. You will then leave České Budějovice along the Vltava. On your way you will pass Hluboká castle, enthroned on a hill high above the Vltava. Its renovation in the neo-Gothic style was based on the model of Windsor castle, with many turrets, crenellations and dainty details. On the last leg of the journey to Písek, you will get to enjoy the fascinating mix of river scenery and virgin or cultivated landscapes along the “gold-bearing” Otava river.

Today’s route brings you through the unspoiled Vltava landscape. Soon you will pass by Zvíkov castle. The position of the magnificent promontory at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava made it an attractive place for settlements as far back as prehistoric times. In the middle ages, the castle was one of the most important and most difficult to conquer in Bohemia. The next attraction is just a few kilometres further along, in Orlík. Here, on a steep cliff above the Vltava, sits the stately Gothic Orlík castle. Furnished by the Schwarzenberger family, the castle is a prime example for the lifestyle of the 19th century aristocracy. Further along, your route continues through the deep-green bohemian forest. Around Milešov you will spot the Vltava Reservoir, and will quickly reach today’s finishing point via small bohemian villages.

A varied route through rolling hills awaits you today, taking you past numerous small, idyllically situated bohemian villages. Small houses with wood-clad gables and dahlias competing with the herbs blooming on the side of the road will irresistibly draw your eye. Cosy inns along the way entice you to stop for a refreshing bohemian beer. The highlight of the day will of course be the arrival in the “golden city”. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is characterised by many things: music and the middle ages, Kafka and Kisch, beer and dumplings with roast pork. Since 1992, the historic downtown of Prague is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The well-preserved city centre, the historic buildings, the winding alleys of the old quarter, the panoramic views from the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle standing guard over everything. Take enough time to see the city at your own pace.

Your tour ends after breakfast. We can then help you book an extension or you can avail of our comfortable transfer service with the bicycle transport van.

Tour character

The topography of this tour can be described as challenging, but the incredibly beautiful and diverse scenery makes up for the difficult climbs. The route includes some steep or long hills, for which it is absolutely acceptable and even recommended to push your bike. With a few exceptions, the route runs along quiet country roads and forest or agricultural paths. Suitable for our more experienced bicycle tour guests.
