Lake Constance - based in one hotel

Rambles on the "Swabian Sea".

The centre based tour Constance is ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to pack their bags every day or commit to specific stages in advance. From your hotel in Constance where you will be based for your entire holiday, you will go on a different excursion every day. Thanks to many trips on the ships of the White Fleet, you will get to know the whole Lake Constance region – you definitely won’t get bored! Say hello to the 6-metre tall lion statue in Lindau’s harbour, explore the sleepy ruins and gardens of Salem Castle and experience the vibrant colours of the flower island of Mainau. It will be up to you to decide how you want to spend each individual day of your bicycle holiday.

Itinerary

Today you will move into your hotel in Constance, whose town remains medieval in character to this day.  In 1414, the town hosted the only church council ever to take place north of the Alps. A small museum is dedicated to the Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burnt at the stake here. The symbol of the city is the statue of Imperia, which is a memorial to the prostitutes of the council time. The aquariums of the Sea Life Center are also worth a visit, as is the Archaeological Museum.

Today you will travel firstly to Friedrichshafen. From here you will follow along the Lake Constance Cycle Path to Langenargen. You will cycle through well-kept villages such as Wasserburg and Nonnenhorn and you will have numerous opportunities to take a break in a beer garden or at a lakeshore beach. Your destination for the day is Lindau, the Bavarian Metropolis on the Lake. The historical Old Town on an island is a popular attraction for visitors. In the afternoon you will return by boat to Constance.

You will have the whole day for your visit to Mainau Island. The lake’s mild climate means that this island is home to palm trees. Depending on the season, you will be able to find a vast array of different plants in bloom on the island. In the spring, you will spot countless blossoming types of Tulips and Hyacinths. Later in the year, Rhododendrons can be seen in their full beauty. In the months of September and October, you will find both Dahlias and around 30.000 rosebushes.

Today you will first travel to Überlingen on the other side of Lake Constance by boat. The Lake Constance Cycle Path will take you to the pilgrimage church Birnau. From here, follow the Prälaten path to Salem. The castle of the former monastic order is an impressive example of southern German Baroque architecture. From the medieval town of Meersburg, which is home to an old and a new castle, the ferry will take you back to Constance.

The first destination of the day is Reichenau Island, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. From here you will get a boat across to Gaienhofen. Here you will be able to visit the Hermann-Hesse-House. You will then continue cycling along the Höri Peninsula. Stein am Rhein has a number of attractive painted house facades. The last leg of the trip leads you along the Swiss, southern shore of the Lower Lake before returning to Constance.
